Mathematics

AS Level Mathematics (Advanced Subsidiary Level)

Overview:

AS Mathematics deepens conceptual understanding and introduces abstract mathematical thinking. It’s more algebraic, analytical, and theorydriven than O Level.

Core Components (Pure Mathematics):

 Algebra: Quadratics, polynomials, functions, inequalities

 Coordinate Geometry: Lines, circles

 Trigonometry: Identities, general solutions, graphs

 Differentiation: From first principles, tangents/normals

Integration: Basic rules and definite integrals

Sequences and Series: Arithmetic and geometric progressions

Applied Mathematics Options (varies by board):

Mechanics: Kinematics, forces, Newton’s laws, vectors in motion

Statistics: Probability, binomial distribution, statistical measures

Decision Mathematics (some boards): Algorithms, networks, linear programming

Skills Developed:

 Symbolic manipulation and mathematical proof

Problem modeling using algebra and calculus

Interpreting and solving reallife applied math problems

 Graph sketching and transformations

Objective:

To prepare students with a core mathematical toolkit for further scientific, engineering, or economic studies.
